Winter Sowing Has Started - Part I

I have the winter blues! I decided to start my vegetable seeds over the week-end. Planning my garden takes the blues away.  This year, I decided to try winter sowing. I've been saving plastic liter, juice and milk bottles. Anything that I can cut and punch holes in the bottom for drainage. I started about 20 bottles over the week-end. Tomatoes, dill, zuchinni, squash, sunflowers and petunias. Tomatoes, dill and petunias reseed, so hopefully I will have a successful germination rate.  Research showed that the squash and zuchinni will also do well. l will continue winter sowing through-out February. I'll start a few tomatoes, cukes and greenbeans inside to ensure I have something to plant.  I set these bottles outside my kitchen door, but will eventually move them to my picnic table.  It had just started snowing, so they received a nice coating.

Stay tuned for additional posts.  If you are a gardener and use the winter sowing method, please share your experience.

  1. You have a good variety of plants started. I hope you have much success. I've only done winter sowing for flowers. Time to plan my garden too. I really need to see what seeds I have/need.

  2. @Gardener on Sherlock - I'll be doing flowers this week-end. I did a few marigolds and left them on the dining room table. They've sprouted. I guess they'll go under the heat lights.

  3. The winter blues are beginning to creep up on all of us. I keep having to remind myself where you live--West Virginia. I've never been there. You have quite a bit of snow. Did you get any from this current storm? We have none. We need lots. I will be watching to see how your seed starts grow. Good luck.

  4. @Ann - We haven't had much snow this year, hope I don't jinx myself. I'm just not fond of winter! I live close to DC, about 1 1/2 hrs away, so what affects them usually hits my area. I think we've average 6 inches so far this year. Had a white Christmas, which is always nice.

  5. I just started winter sowing for the first time this week! I'm really excited. I'm in northern VA and tucked my containers into the mulch a bit since we don't have any snow cover. I'm sowing flowers, herbs, and just a few tomato seeds. Have you winter sown before or is this your first time, too?

    1. Nice to have a fellow gardener so close. This is my first time winter sowing. I'm also anxious to see how this works out. I'm starting a few seeds inside, just in case it doesn't work for me. Starting following your blog, it's nice to have someone gardening in the same zone.

  7. @Amy Andrychowicz - This is my first time winter sowing. I'm anixous to see if it produces for me. If so, I plan to scale back my indoor seeding.

  8. Rhonda, we kicked butt on winter sowing here in Zone 6. I did a couple of flowers but mostly vegetables, and the crops in the cold frame also did well. I've got another 75 containers to get done over the next few days. I have 79 different vegetables going into the garden and I like the benefits of WS.
