I'm Seeing Green

The tomatoes aren't doing as well as I like, but I'm still seeing lots of green.  I have plenty of zucchini that has come through, but only 1 squash has sprouted.  I started a few more last night in hopes that I can at least plant 4 of each in the garden.   I decided to build 4 x 4 trellis' this year for the squash, zucchini and cukes.  They produce delicious veggies, but they take too much room in the garden.   I have several ideas for the trellis, so stay tuned for future posts.

In my last post, I mentioned trying to start dill for my pickles.  I have 2 sprouts.  I started six, hopefully the others will germinate.

The chili and cayenne peppers are doing great.  I have 12 that have sprouted.  I'm hoping for 16 chili, cayenne, Hungarian, and jalapeno.

I've started several varieties of mixed sunflowers in newspaper pots and Mexican sunflowers in the peat pots below.  I love the orange color of the Mexican sunflowers.  I hope they germinate, I want to plant them behind my tomato plants.

    1. Yes, it is exciting. This is my first year starting from seed. I was hoping that a few would germinate, but it looks like I'll have plenty if everything survives. I'll stop by to see what you have going on.

  2. Well, your starts look about like ours. Only ours are tall and lanky. I think it's the light. The seedlings tend to lean into the sun. I suppose we need patience and practice. We moved ours to a window where there is more direct sunlight. Here's hoping. Be patient. Happy Easter.

    1. My tomatoes are tall & lanky. I'm going to repot the tomatoes over the week-end. I'm going to plant them deep so only the leaves are up. I'm hoping that will help develop strong roots. It is def a learning experience. This is my first year starting from seed. Next year I'm going to start earlier. Happy Easter to you too.

  3. I'm looking forward to seeing how you build your trellises. I planted my cukes a little too close together so I'm also brain-storming ideas for building them. I also had tall lanky tomatoes when I started them inside. When I transplanted them to the garden, I buried about 3/4 of the plant. Now they are filling out nicely and seem to be pretty strong. Good luck to you and your plants!

  4. Before you make those tomato cages - let me get a photo of the one from my neighbor. It's pretty incredible. I'll ask his help at church on Sunday. He is out rock hounding with my father in law right now so he won't be back until then.

    1. Okay, can't wait to see a picture. I have a Tractor Supply not far from me that carries the cattle panels for a reasonable price.

  7. Everything looks great! I talked to my neighbor about getting me a photo of the tomato cages they built. I even gave her my email address so hopefully I'll have that soon.
