Roma Tomatoes Stunted?

My Sweet 100s have reached over 6 feet and the vines are loaded.  I looking forward to snacking on these babies.  All and all, the tomatoes are looking good except the Roma.  Initially my concern was the Amish Paste.  It has taken off, and now I'm worried about my Roma.  I mean far behind.  It appears that the Roma's growth has been stunted.  It is producing fruit, but it is not progressing upward like the other tomatoes.  Mama is worried about her baby, so I'm going to give it a few doses of fertilizer over the course of the next few weeks and see what happens.

My Roma is pictured below.  See she has barerly gotten off the ground.  I was expecting it to reach at least 4 feet, she's barely 3 feet.  I'm hoping for a good harvest, I had planned to use these particular tomatoes to can for chili and spaghetti sauce this winter.

For you experienced gardeners or those who have planted the Roma tomato previously.  Any suggestions or advice?

  1. My advice is - patience! If Nature intends the plant to get big, it will get big... Sometimes plants don't thrive, however much TLC you lavish upon them.

  2. I've grown romas and they usually topped out at 4 feet and still made tomatos. Do you have any blooms/tomatoes?

  3. @Gardener on Sherlock Street - It is blooming and producing tomatoes. I thought it would reach at least 4 feet, not 2 or 3.

  4. I live in zone 5. Typically my tomatoes never get over three feet. In fact a 6 foot tomato scares me. I don't think I am alone in my height. The gardens around me are similar. Production and size don't always go together. Let them grow they may just be a slower variety. Sometimes comparing varieties isn't good. You seem to be very successful with everything else that is probably the best indicator.

  5. We have romas growing now. They are not tall--about 3 ft.--, but the plants look very healthy and are setting fruit. I am a lazy gardener, I have to admit. My husband tiled in compost and top soil before we planted and that seem to make all the difference. Follow Mark's advice and give them a bit of Miracle Grow. Good luck. Hope to see romas here soon.

  6. Not all tomatoes grow tall. Romas stay small. I don't even cage mine. They'll get full and heavy soon enough. Also, pull off the suckers to make them less bushy and let a little light into the center.
